Makati relaunches e-JEEPs

Makati City today yesterday re-launched 21 electric jeepneys (e-jeepneys) plying the Legaspi village and Salcedo Village loops after the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) granted franchises for the units last February 8.

Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay said the granting of the franchises was timely as these have been pending with the LTFRB for a long time. He added that the granting of franchises for the electric jeepneys is a mark of pride for the city.

“Makati is the first city in Metro Manila and the country to operate electric vehicles for public transport, and this is enough reason for the city government to celebrate. I firmly believe that through this initiative, Makati is contributing much to the reduction of carbon emissions that contribute to global warming and the changing climate,” Binay said.

Passenger ‘e-jeeps’ to start rolling in Makati

The government has granted special franchises to 10 electric-powered jeepneys that will ply two new routes in Makati City.

An official of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said the franchises given to the jeepneys operated by E-Jeepney Transport Corp. are an exemption to the current moratorium on the issuance of franchises to public utility jeepneys.

“The Department of Transportation and Communication is giving priority to those using alternative fuels like the electronic-powered vehicles,” said Lawyer Manuel Iway, LTFRB board member.
